One Year Later: FATF’s Focus on Asset Recovery

This time last year, our co-founder and CEO Aidan Larkin had the privilege of moderating a panel at the second FATF-INTERPOL Roundtable Engagement (FIRE) in Lyon. Our discussion featured Jarod Koopman of IRS Criminal Investigation, Stefan Jerga of the Australian Federal Police and Toyin Salako of the Cayman Islands Government, where we explored the challenges and opportunities for asset recovery globally.

This pivotal event marked FATF’s renewed commitment to improving seized asset management on a global scale.

Aidan’s reflections from that day still resonate deeply:

“So often an after-thought, witnessing seized asset management getting discussed on one of, if not the, most important global stage for our sector, fills me with pride and an enormous sense of optimism for the future ahead. The figures are staggering - literally, trillions being laundered globally.”
“We need to strip criminals of their illicit assets. It doesn’t matter the category. From virtual assets to vehicles, the asset class isn’t criminal, but if it’s being used to launder or invest proceeds of criminality, it must be recovered.”

Fast forward to today: while some key jurisdictions have made progress, FATF’s latest report shows that nearly 75% of jurisdictions still haven’t taken meaningful steps towards implementing the recommendations. Despite progress in select areas, the vast majority of jurisdictions still have significant ground to cover, highlighting the urgent need for continued action and reform.
